RELATIONSHIP ADVICE - ASK BRENDA

First Date with a Lovely Doctor

Dear Brenda,

I have a blind date tonight with a lovely woman here in Springfield, IL. She wanted to take a walk through the park. She is 49 years old and is a widow. She is highly educated (MD) and an assistant professor at the medical school here. I would like to bring her a small gift but since I am basically a local farm boy, I don't know what is appropriate. Any ideas???
- Brian

Dear Brian,

One of the easiest and sweetest gifts you can give a woman on a first date is a single flower. I would suggest going to a nice florist and picking up a single orchid. This is a beautiful, sophisticated exotic flower that will surely impress her. A single flower is good for a few reasons. 1. You aren't going overboard, and 2. You are showing that you thought enough of her to bring her a gift.

I would stay away from roses, especially those wrapped with baby's breath (those small white straw flowers) because that one has been overdone to death, and might appear to show a lack of imagination. You want to stand out!

Have a great time tonight on your date!
