RELATIONSHIP ADVICE - ASK BRIAN

How do I start a potential long distance relationship?

Dear Brian,
I met this woman over Thanksgiving break and we've kept in touch with each through phone calls and text messages. When I went home for Christmas break we were unable to get together. Now I'm back at school (she's in Rhode Island and I'm in New Jersey - a 4 hour difference). Even though I only met up with her the first night we met, I still really like her. So, how do I bring it to her attention that I would like to get to know her as more than a friend without being pushy and how do I start a potential long distance relationship? Should I be straight forward and not be shy about things? - Taurus

Dear Taurus,
I definitely think you should be straight forward in this situation. Let the distance between the two of you work to your advantage. Lay it on the line in a text message or phone call. If she finds your straight forward manner a turn-off, you're far enough apart to avoid creating an uncomfortable situation the way you might if she wasn't interested and lived across the street. Of course, by "straight forward," I don't mean you should be pushy, but telling her you like her and want to see her again isn't pushy. It's flattering. Even though you're far enough apart that you're not risking too much by pursuing her, you're still close enough to get together with her from time to time. If she is receptive to your interest in her, you could hopefully find a mutually convenient time to get together. If you can't go to Rhode Island or if she can't go to New Jersey, meet each other halfway. Providing this appeals to her, you might even suggest meeting at a hotel, perhaps booking separate rooms (if you don't want to imply a sexual interest too early) and spending a weekend together sight-seeing, dining out, or whatever comes to mind (smile).
