FEATURE STORY

You Call THAT a Profile?

Browsing profiles can be a real eye-opener, and there are hefty debates about what makes a good and effective one. Some say be pithy and brief, others say, be specific, story-like, and detailed. And then there are the profiles themselves—some folks write just about how they love broadway shows and walks on the beach, others fill theirs with jokes and sarcasm. Then there are the profiles of the women in wedding gowns looking for a husband by this time next Thursday, and the musings of men who are ready to find their best friend. What is right for you?

Take a look at which profiles you actually like to read and write back to. If you love the short ones or the long ones or if you don’t even read them, your future mate will probably be the same. Craft yours like the ones you like to read, and see who you attract. Try one style one week and see who writes to you—and if you don’t like the responses, try another.

The important key is to be yourself! The more you are YOU in your profile, the more your energy will attract matches that are right for you. Experiment! And find the best style for you.

As for specificity or generality—you will have to judge that for yourself which you prefer. Many people enjoy having their inboxes full of responses when they’ve put out a very general, says-very-little profile, but they usually have to do A LOT of weeding out of the people who are wrong for them. People who are REALLY specific about their requirements do get fewer responses, but they generally l have to weed less. So it’s your choice. With practice, experimentation, and editing, you’ll find what works for you.
